Great Rivers Greenway is the public agency making the St. Louis region a more vibrant place to live, work and play by developing a regional network of greenways. In 2000, a vote of the people created a sales tax to leave a legacy for future generations by investing in and connecting some of our region’s best assets. Those funds allow us to collaborate with partners and communities to build, care for and bring to life your network of greenways, creating healthy habitats and watersheds along the way. We collaborate with municipalities, public agencies, businesses and nonprofit organizations across St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Charles County to deliver on the community’s vision for a dynamic, thriving and connected region. Safety and security is an important consideration for every greenway project. Because primary operations and care for the greenways, including safety, is the responsibility of our partner agency where the greenway is situated, we work with them throughout the design process. Our goal is to address user safety—both perceived and real—and encourage project architects and engineers to utilize elements of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) in greenway planning and design.
Once a project is complete, Great Rivers Greenway’s role is not over. Our operations staff remains involved to varying degrees with ongoing greenway support including safety. This involvement can include anything from providing technical support to hiring security personnel to implementing a Greenway Guide Program with the Urban League. There is also growing interest from partners and local law enforcement in the use of security cameras at high profile areas such as trail heads, playgrounds and areas known as ‘hot spots’ for undesirable activity. Working together with partners across the region, we aim to deliver not only an excellent greenway, but also the best possible experience for the greenway users.
Ben Grossman, Director of Greenway Operations, oversees the organizations operations, conservation and volunteer programs. His background is in natural resource management, has worked in park operations for 18 years and is a Certified Professional in Recreation and Parks.
